Abstract: In recent years, an array of guidance for intervention development has emerged, including the recent INDEX guidance in the UK. In order to develop interventions which are relevant, feasible, meaningful and acceptable for the populations and settings they are intended to benefit, there is a need to involve stakeholders with working knowledge of the problem to be addressed by the intervention, the population it targets, and the setting in which it is to be delivered. Co-production is argued as central to achieving this ecological fit and identifying and overcoming implementation barriers during intervention development. This talk will discuss the rationale for co-producing interventions and examine examples and approaches to doing so. This will draw on a framework developed to expand on existing intervention development guidance by providing detailed processes and methods for working with intended recipients and providers of interventions. The framework offers an approach for the rapid identification of potential barriers to implementation and effectiveness and possible solutions to these to help avoid the costly implementation and evaluation of interventions which are not feasible to deliver in practice. Since publication in 2017, it has been used to inform interventions across various fields including child and adult mental health, respiratory health, obesity, sedentary behaviour, substance use, reproductive health, diabetes, acute healthcare, health policy and social work. The talk will conclude with reflection on the challenges involved in the co-production process and how these might be navigated.
