Development of prescribing patterns for combined hormonal contraceptives in Germany after Dear Doctor Letters (Rote-Hand-Briefe) in December 2018 and September 2021

Description

Several studies have shown an increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) among users of combined oral contraceptives (COCs), and this risk has been shown to differ by type of progestogen. Direct Healthcare Professional Communications ("Dear Doctor Letters") warning about the differences in VTE risk were disseminated in Germany alongside educational material for patients and checklists for the prescribing physicians.

The objective of this study is to describe prescribing patterns of COCs in the years 2013-2022, i.e., before and after the direct Healthcare Professional Communications and other efforts for risk minimization.
