Physical activity and health equity: Primary prevention for healthy ageing (AEQUIPA I)

Description

AEQUIPA is a prevention research network located in the Bremen-Oldenburg metropolitan region and based on the cooperation of six universities, two research institutes and the Gesundheitswirtschaft Nordwest e. V. The network's core topic is physical activity as an important factor for healthy ageing. AEQUIPA uses theory-based empirical research to develop, implement and evaluate interventions for primary prevention. The overall goal of the network is to strengthen the evidence base for healthy ageing and to generate knowledge on environmental, social-contextual and individual factors associated with physical activity in older adults (65+).
The AEQUIPA network is coordinated by the BIPS and comprises six subprojects with different foci. Besides an analysis of the community readiness, an intervention concerning the self-monitoring and the increase of older people’s physical activity behaviour will be conducted. Another subproject investigates factors influencing outdoor physical activity. Special interest weighs on the research of new technologies to support primary-preventive interventions of physical activity. Furthermore, strategies of the spatial planning concerning the design of the living environment and public spaces with regard to pedestrian- and bicycle-friendliness are explored. A cross-sectional issue is health equity, considered in the development of methods for sociocultural sensitive promotion of physical activity. In addition to the subprojects, the graduate programme serves the needs of the PhD fellows of the AEQIPA network.
