Integration of sex and gender aspects into medical and health research – Final conference of the European Gender Medicine Project

The final conference of the project EUGenMed - funded by the European Commission - took place on June 30th, in Brussels. Dirk Gansefort from the Department of Prevention and Evaluation -  BIPS, was invited as an expert for the workshop "Sex and Gender in Public Health and Prevention". He is also involved in a joint publication entitled "Sex and gender aspects of risk factors for non-communicable diseases across Europe". At the final conference, the participants particularly discussed about possible communication strategies regarding how the knowledge gathered in the context of the project can reach the relevant institutions.

The aim of the EUGenMed project is to develop a strategic roadmap for the integration of sex and gender aspects into biomedical and health research in Europe. In addition, a European network of experts on sex and gender-sensitive medical and health research will be set up. To achieve these goals, several workshops with stakeholders in medicine and public health were carried out to gather ideas for strategic measures. These measures should address the areas of basic biomedical research, clinical medicine and pharmacology, public health and prevention as well as medical teaching and guideline development.

The EUGenMed project which is led by the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, the University of Maastricht and the "European Institute of Women's Health", will end in September 2015.
