New York Times reports on BIPS project

A lack of media attention to the work of BIPS really cannot be complained about in recent years. Nevertheless, a report by the New York Times remains something out of the ordinary. Especially when it draws attention to a rather small project.

It is about the project "COVID-TCM". The back part of the abbreviation stands for Trained Commuity Mediators. Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Hajo Zeeb and coordinated by Marieke Gerstmann of the BIPS, the COVID-TCM project is testing the use of health mediators to improve education about corona protection measures and vaccination acceptance in diverse population groups.

Individuals who are well-connected in the district were selected to work as health mediators. The total of eight health mediators serve as role models and facilitators in the project and are able to meet residents at eye level and with understanding through a common language or culture.

The project serves as a hook for the New York Times to explain the comparatively high vaccination rate in Bremen. You can find the newspaper article here.

The numerous other reports, for example in Buten un Binnen, Die Zeit and Deutschlandfunk, show that the project seems to have filled a gap that is also being noticed by the media.
