Epidemiological methods and experiences in research projects on child and adolescent health

Description

In this project, both partners from the Peking University in China and the Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology - BIPS in Germany will mutually investigate risk factors for child and adolescent health making use of large existing databases that have been generated over the past decades for new research.
In recent years, diet- and lifestyle related disorders have become a major health threat in Germany and China, also adding to increased ill health with unacceptable human, social and economic costs. The most obvious consequence of unhealthy dietary behaviours and associated lifestyles is excess body weight and resulting cardiovascular and metabolic sequelae already at young age. Under these circumstances, it is vital to further investigate country-specific risk factors of child and adolescent health and related upstream factors (using epidemiological data) and to evaluate effects of national health policy actions/interventions (using health surveillance data).
In order to learn from each other, we currently bring together the leading epidemiological research teams on child health in China and Germany, to transfer knowledge on epidemiological research and to stimulate our epidemiologists, nutritionists, biologists and statisticians as well as early career scientists to have collaborating work in this field by workshops and multiple visits.
By answering concrete research questions, our main objective is to improve knowledge of epidemiological and statistical methods in both partners’ teams, with topics covering obesity, metabolic syndrome and other lifestyle-related disorders regarded as critical health concerns in children and adolescents. We expect to take this chance to explore the possibility of further bi-nationally collaborating project, and to provide evidence for effective prevention strategies to policy makers.
