The structured doctoral education consists of three parts: (i) the doctoral seminar "Epidemiology, Prevention Research, and Biometry", (ii) a number of courses on working techniques and extracurricular qualifications, and (iii) a doctoral workshop. The first part, the doctoral seminar, offers broad professional training and ensures that doctoral students also acquire knowledge and skills not directly linked to their doctoral subjects (so-called soft skills). The curriculum includes, among other things, lectures on basic epidemiology, prevention research and biometry, statistical project planning, implementation and evaluation, special epidemiological methods, ethical and legal aspects as well as the rules of good scientific and epidemiological practice. The courses offered in the second part of the program cover, among other things, literature searching, literature management, "scientific writing," and "scientific English". In addition, the doctoral students are advised to take advantage of external offers, e.g., of the University of Bremen, in particular courses on presentation techniques, communication skills, and self-management and time management. The third part, the doctoral workshop, provides a platform for discussing the dissertation as well as other relevant topics within the group of doctoral students at BIPS. In addition to exchanging information on research topics and methodological questions, it also serves to test presentation techniques. The so-called dissertation representatives, a team of two senior scientists and two doctoral students, attend to the concerns of doctoral students at BIPS.
