Regular exercise plays a key role in cancer prevention

The 5th Edition of the European Code Against Cancer is reaching its final stages, following the recent Executive Meeting hosted by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) at the end of October. In this session, Prof. Dr. Hajo Zeeb, Head of the Department Prevention and Evaluation at the Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology – BIPS, joined other experts from across Europe to refine recommendations to help prevent cancer. Prof. Dr. Zeeb remarked, “It was an intense and highly engaging session, and we are now set to finalize a thoroughly updated European Cancer Code.”

A Critical Update for Cancer Prevention in Europe

The European Code Against Cancer serves as a vital reference to educate the public on actions to reduce cancer risk. Originally launched in 1987, the Code offers clear recommendations—from reducing alcohol and tobacco use to increasing physical activity—backed by scientific research and designed to empower individuals to make informed health choices. This 5th Edition aims to reflect the latest research, addressing emerging health threads to ensure the recommendations remain relevant and impactful across Europe.
Addressing New Challenges in Cancer Prevention

The Code Against Cancer has evolved to include emerging prevention strategies and respond to new health challenges. This update focuses not only on familiar lifestyle factors but also on advancements in vaccination, environmental health, and early cancer detection policies. Once finalized, the 5th Edition will be available as a resource for individuals, health professionals, and policymakers to access evidence-based guidance on cancer prevention.
