Defending Freedom of Research
The free exchange of ideas is the foundation of all scientific knowledge. Progress does not come from ideology, but from openness to results, fact-based discussions, healthy scepticism, and the pursuit of truth. This process is not flawless, but it is the only method that has proven itself to gain knowledge and advance societies.
Article 5 of the German Basic Law guarantees the freedom of research and teaching. It is our duty to protect this freedom. We must defend it: against attacks on its legitimacy, against fear of uncomfortable truths, and against attempts to erase scientific knowledge through simple denial.
At BIPS, we investigate how to prevent disease and promote health. Our work is based on evidence, not ideology. We collaborate with researchers around the world and are open to constructive dialogue about our shared values. Risks and diseases spread globally, and combating them requires global collaboration and common understanding.
Those who question the freedom of research endanger not only scientific progress, but also the foundation of an enlightened society. The world faces enormous challenges – from pandemics and the climate crisis to social and health inequalities. These can only be addressed through fact-based analysis and evidence-driven action. It is our shared responsibility to protect science – against political interference and disinformation.
