The fifth round of the Data Train program began with a celebratory opening ceremony on January 15, 2025 . Approximately 200 people participated in the event, both in-person at the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) in Bremen and online.

During the kick-off event, program ambassadors Iris Pigeot, Oliver Glöckner, and Rolf Drechsler discussed the importance of effective methods for research data management and the role of data science with Tanja Hörner and Lina Schaare. Iris Pigeot, the director of BIPS and co-spokesperson for the NFDI4Health consortium, joined others in a panel discussion to provide insights into the specific data management requirements of various disciplines. The discussion also emphasized the pivotal role of the NFDI (National Research Data Infrastructure) in building national structures for effective data management. The implications of AI and machine learning were also addressed, with a particular focus on the need to not only manage research data but also ensure its quality and accessibility—key prerequisites for implementing the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable).
