BIPS Successfully Evaluated
According to the statement, BIPS has developed exceptionally well over the past seven years. It plays a leading role in national and international epidemiological research and delivers excellent, globally competitive results. The Senate therefore recommends that the federal and state governments continue to support the institute. With this, BIPS has successfully passed the regular Leibniz evaluation. The final decision on continued funding now lies with the Joint Science Conference.
“We are very pleased with the recognition by the international review panel and the Senate of the Leibniz Association,” said Prof Dr Iris Pigeot, Director of BIPS. “The result confirms the high quality and relevance of our research and acknowledges the fantastic work of all our employees. At the same time, it motivates us to continue working with full commitment towards a healthier society.”
Leibniz Institutes are externally evaluated every seven years. An internationally composed panel assesses the research strategy and scientific achievements based on written documentation and a site visit. On the basis of the panel’s report, the Senate of the Leibniz Association decides whether to recommend continued funding of the institution to the federal and state governments.
Outstanding Research Achievements
In November 2024, the review panel visited BIPS. The Senate of the Leibniz Association has now issued its response. It praises the exceptionally successful development of the institute in recent years. Based on extensive, often self-collected data sets, BIPS achieves outstanding research results and combines disciplines ranging from statistics to medicine. The institute uses new findings to develop effective prevention measures and advises policymakers and practitioners.
The Senate highlights BIPS’s leading role in both national and international epidemiological research. Together with the University of Bremen and other partners, it has established a data science training programme for doctoral students and is closely involved in the nationwide NAKO Health Study, a large-scale cohort study on common diseases. The Senate also supports BIPS’s role as spokesperson within NFDI4Health, thereby reinforcing its leading position in the field of research data. The Senate particularly welcomes the institute’s renewed recognition as a Collaborating Centre of the World Health Organization (WHO).
BIPS – Health research for the benefit of mankind
The population is at the center of our research. As an epidemiological research institute, we see our mission in identifying the causes of health disorders and developing new concepts for the prevention of diseases. Our research provides a basis for societal decisions. It informs the population about health risks and contributes to a healthy living environment. BIPS is a member of the Leibniz Association, which comprises 96 independent research institutions. The orientation of the Leibniz Institutes ranges from the natural, engineering and environmental sciences to economics, spatial and social sciences and the humanities. Leibniz Institutes address issues of social, economic and ecological relevance. Due to their national importance, the institutes of the Leibniz Association are jointly funded by the federal and state governments. The Leibniz Institutes employ around 20,000 people, including 10,000 scientists. The institutes' total budget is 2 billion euros.
