New Professor and Head of the Department of Clinical Epidemiology

In September, Ulrike Haug was appointed as Professor of Clinical Epidemiology and Pharmacoepidemiology at the University of Bremen. The position incorporates heading the Department of Clinical Epidemiology at the Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research - BIPS. Ulrike Haug succeeds Professor Edeltraut Garbe who served in this function from 2007 until her retirement.

After receiving her degree in pharmacy from the University of Würzburg, Ulrike Haug joined the Research Training Group in Epidemiology at the German Centre for Research on Ageing at Heidelberg University where she completed her doctorate. She continued her research at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg. She also taught at the University of Heidelberg and in 2013 habilitated in epidemiology. During this time, she also held a position as Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, USA and researched at numerous institutions as a visiting scholar, among others in Rotterdam. Ulrike Haug is 39 years old and has three children.

Colorectal cancer screening is an important research focus of Ulrike Haug. She is currently working on a diagnostic review of test methods such as fecal occult blood tests as well as the optimization and evaluation of programs for the early detection of cancer. Furthermore, she focuses on cancer prevention in high-risk groups, particularly in people with a familial history of cancer. In the future, she plans to incorporate the focus of the Department of Clinical Epidemiology in the area of drug utilization and drug safety (pharmacoepidemiology) into her own research.

Ulrike Haug has already received numerous awards such as the Young Investigator Award of the German Society of Epidemiology, a research fellowship from the Dr. Mildred Scheel Foundation for Cancer Research, and the Felix Burda Award in the category Medical Prevention.
