HOME: Problem Management Plus (PM+) – Empowered in daily life

Refugees are at increased risk of psychological distress and, consequently, have a greater need for psychosocial support. They suffer from psychological distress due to traumatic experiences in their country of origin, as well as during and after their flight. Nevertheless, the majority of those who exhibit psychological distress and need help do not receive counseling or therapy.

The “Problem Management Plus” (PM+) intervention, developed by the World Health Organization (WHO), is a low-threshold, preventive psychological measure aimed at reducing psychological distress among refugees. It has proven particularly effective internationally. What makes PM+ unique is that it is delivered by trained providers who speak the participants’ language.

The HOME project aims to explore the implementation of PM+ specifically for refugees in Germany.

What is the aim of the scientific accompaniment within HOME?

The HOME project aims to implement and test PM+ specifically among refugees in Germany. The focus is not only on testing the program in Bremen, but also on understanding how it can be optimally adapted to local conditions. The project is being carried out in cooperation with Refugio Bremen e.V.. Another goal of the project is to develop implementation guidelines that can serve as basis for introducing PM+ in other regions of Germany, so that others can also benefit from the lessons learned.
