Research Fellow in Conflict and Mental Health (m/f/d)

Salary Scale 13 of the German Public Sector Salary System (TV-L)

39,20 hours/ week (100 %) starting as soon as possible (administrative clearance permitting) for the duration of 2 years (with the possibility of extension depending upon funding). Part-time employment might be possible (depending on approval of the funding agency).

Job description

The post holder will work on the CHANGE project (https://www.lshtm.ac.uk/research/centres-projects-groups/change). CHANGE is a 5-year funded project by the Wellcome Trust and started in June 2020. CHANGE seeks to develop and implement a new psychological intervention addressing alcohol misuse and mental health co-morbidities among conflict-affected populations in Uganda and Ukraine. Project partners include the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, HealthRight International Uganda, the University of Copenhagen, and the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla. The Research Fellow will be based in Bremen at BIPS and will support different work packages of CHANGE, primarily supporting the Ukraine site during the implementation of the definite randomised controlled trial.

Main activities and responsibilities

• To support the design and implementation of the pilot RCT and definite RCT in Ukraine, write trial standard operating procedures and support the project manager in Ukraine with the day to day implementation of the trial
• To help manage the process evaluation to identify, characterise and explain mechanisms that promote or inhibit the delivery and take up of the psychological intervention across different phases of the project
• To examine the potential for scaling up PM+A through drafting topic guides and support the delivery of ToC workhops
• To undertake high quality research and scholarship including to contributing to drafting major grant proposals and/or leading on drafting small grant proposals
• To contribute to peer reviewed publications and other output

Requirements

• A postgraduate degree, ideally a doctoral degree in mental health, public health, or epidemiology
• Relevant experience in mental health or public health research among conflict-affected populations or other vulnerable populations  
• Knowledge of trial design and/or experience in conducting definite randomised controlled trials
• Experience in conducting qualitative research with vulnerable populations
• Very good English language skills (Ukranian and/or Russian language skills would be an asset)
