International conference on managing radiation induced health risks to be held in Fukushima

For the second time the Fukushima Medical University will, from the 25^th to the 27^th of February, hold a scientific conference on the outcomes of the Fukushima nuclear catastrophe from March 11, 2011 and the activities of the past two years in the Fukushima Prefecture. The Bremen public health scientist Hajo Zeeb, from the Leibniz Institute of Prevention Research and Epidemiology – BIPS, is once again invited as an expert.

The medical doctor and radiation protection expert, Hajo Zeeb, will report on the knowledge of doctors on radiation risks. Doctors play an important role in risk communication on radiation and health. However, according to international studies, existing knowledge on this topic is often requires improvement.

Hajo Zeeb has been involved in epidemiological and health science research on radiation risks for many years and led among others a large project on natural radiation at the World Health Organization. After the Fukushima catastrophe the Japanese government appointed him to an international group of experts.   

The conference will bring together what is known about the consequences of the nuclear catastrophe and the associated radiation exposure for the population, as well as the multifaceted activities and reactions. Other presentations will be held among others by experts from the World Health Organization, the International Commission on Radiological Protection and the International Atomic Energy Agency.
