Radiation protection: Hajo Zeeb reappointed to the SSK Executive Board

The German Commission for Radiological Protection (SSK) has a new Executive Board – and Prof. Dr. Hajo Zeeb remains part of the leadership. The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Protection, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety has reappointed the committee for 2026. Zeeb, head of the Prevention and Evaluation Department at the Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology (BIPS), will continue to serve as deputy chair and also heads the SSK crisis management team.

“I am very pleased about the renewed trust,” says Zeeb. “Radiation protection is a central public health task. It is about assessing risks on a scientific basis and advising politicians and the population in a transparent manner – especially in uncertain times.”

Advisory body with a long tradition

The SSK has been advising the German government on issues relating to protection against ionizing and non-ionizing radiation for more than 50 years. The independent body consists of 18 volunteer experts from various disciplines, ranging from medicine and epidemiology to radiation biology. The Executive Board coordinates the content of the work and represents the commission externally.

Focus on public health and evidence

Zeeb has headed the Prevention and Evaluation Department at BIPS since 2010 and is a professor of epidemiology at the University of Bremen. His work focuses on evidence-based prevention, the evaluation of chronic diseases, and radiation epidemiology. He is active in numerous professional associations and scientific committees both nationally and internationally.
