You gave blood. A great deal of good has come of it. Now you can help shape what comes next.

So far we have measured you and asked you questions. Now we want to know what you make of it – and what we should look into next.

Since 2007, more than 16,000 children in eight countries have taken part in IDEFICS and I.Family. You were one of them: questionnaires, examinations, blood samples. Four things we know today because you took part.

Doctors can examine children better.

What counts as normal blood pressure or normal blood sugar in an eight-year-old? For adults this had long been known; for children it was not. We measured it in you. Today those reference values exist – along with a tool that paediatricians use to work with them.

Playgrounds get children moving.

Where there are safe parks, playgrounds, footpaths and cycle paths, children move more. So whoever builds a city also helps decide how healthily the children in it grow up.

Advertising is stronger than parents.

Children who watch a lot of television advertising drink far more sugary drinks. Even when their parents forbid it. Anyone calling today for a ban on advertising aimed at children draws on this finding.

Those with less money have a harder time.

In families with a low income and little formal education, almost twice as many children became overweight as in well-off families. The older the children, the wider the gap. You only see that if you follow 16,000 children over years.

That is why we need you now

For six years we have asked you nothing. By now you are around 25 – and a great deal is decided at exactly this age. How strong your bones stay for the rest of your life is settled between 20 and 30: ten per cent more bone mass now means half as many fractures later.

We want to carry on with our research. But we do not want to send you another questionnaire that we thought up on our own.

So we are asking you:

  • What would you like to know about your own health? Sleep, stress, diet, phones, work, children – or something entirely different?
  • What was annoying back then?
  • How much time would you give up? What works on a screen, what only works here with us?
  • What is research still not looking into, although it should have long ago?

Tell us. We will write the questionnaires afterwards.

No lecture. No examination. Two hours of talking.
