Our mission is to identify and credential causes of chronic diseases and to improve the methods for conducting epidemiologic studies. We develop and apply modern epidemiologic methods for studies on how biological, behavioral, environmental, and social factors are distributed in the population and how they influence health and disease.
Our vision is to create a solid etiologic foundation for effective and impactful interventions at the individual and population level. We aim to shape the future of descriptive and etiologic epidemiology with high-quality, up-to-date, and reproducible research on factors influencing health across the life course.
Our experience in collecting primary data and improving exposure assessment is the basis for our research. The department hosts the German National Cohort (NAKO) Bremen study center and the BIPS BioBank and runs flagship research studies at BIPS, such as the IDEFICS/I.Family cohort.
