Einflussfaktoren auf das Ernährungsverhalten europäischer Kinder, Jugendlicher und ihrer Eltern

I.Family - Du bist, was Du isst und wie Du isst

Das I.Family Projekt hat untersucht, wie sich Heranwachsende und ihre Familien in Europa ernähren und wie dies ihre Gesundheit langfristig beeinflusst. An der Studie beteiligten sich 17 Forschungsinstitute und Unternehmen aus 12 europäischen Ländern. Koordiniert und geleitet wurde die Studie von Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Ahrens, Universität Bremen/ Leibniz-Institut für Präventionsforschung und Epidemiologie – BIPS. Beginn des Projektes war im März 2012, Ende im Februar 2017. Die Europäische Kommission hat die groß angelegte Studie im Rahmen des siebten Forschungsrahmenprogramms mit insgesamt 9 Millionen Euro finanziert.

Einflüsse auf das Ernährungsverhalten
Viele Faktoren beeinflussen das Ernährungsverhalten junger Menschen und die Wahl ihrer Lebensmittel. Zeit mit der Familie und der Einfluss der Eltern konkurrieren mit dem Wunsch nach einem modernen, unabhängigen Lebensstil. Industriell aufbereitete Lebensmittel, Getränke und Snacks sind immer verfügbar, begleitet vom Marketing der Lebensmittelindustrie und dem Druck durch Gleichaltrige. Zerstreuung am Bildschirm ersetzt körperliche Aktivität. Ergänzt werden all diese Faktoren mit erlernten Geschmackspräferenzen und genetischen Prädispositionen.

Aufbauend auf der IDEFICS Studie (www.idefics.eu) mit über 10.000 teilnehmenden Kindern in Europa ermöglichte I.Family einen tieferen Einblick in die wichtigsten Einflüsse auf den Lebensstil europäischer Kinder in Bezug auf ihre Ernährung. Dazu betrachtete I.Family die aus der IDEFICS Studie bereits erfassten Kinder, die zu Beginn der I.Family-Studie an der Schwelle zur Pubertät standen, sowie ihre Familien. Im Fokus stand der Vergleich von den Familien, die ein gesundes Ernährungsverhalten angenommen hatten mit denjenigen, die ihren bisherigen Lebensstil beibehalten hatten. So hat das Projekt zum Verständnis der biologischen, verhaltensbezogenen, sozialen und umweltbedingten Einflüsse auf das Ernährungsverhalten von Kindern in der Phase des Erwachsenwerdens beigetragen.

Die WHO (World Health Organization) schätzt, dass Ernährungsrisiken durch eine ungesunde Ernährung für über 950,000 Todesfälle und den Verlust von über 16 Millionen der gesunden Lebensjahre (DALY = disability-adjusted life years) in der europäischen Bevölkerung verantwortlich sind. Vor diesem Hintergrund ist es für gesundheitspolitische Entscheidungsträger und andere Gesundheitsexperten unerlässlich zu wissen, wie Familien auf dem Weg zu einem gesunden Lebensstil begleitet werden können. Familien konnten von den Ergebnissen der I.Family-Studie profitieren, indem grundlegende Erkenntnisse für ein langes, gesünderes Leben veranschaulicht wurden.

Eine weitere Folgeuntersuchung fand 2020-2021 in Form eines web-basierten Fragebogens statt, um die Gesundheit und das Verhalten der Teilnehmenden der IDEFICS/I.Family-Kohorte weiter zu untersuchen, von denen viele zu diesem Zeitpunkt bereits das Erwachsenenalter erreicht hatten
