The Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology – BIPS GmbH is a vibrant epidemiological research institute in the Northwest of Germany. The Department ‘Prevention and Evaluation’ is dedicated to major thematic fields: i) health inequalities with specific reference to migration and gender, ii) innovative interventions for health promotion including digital public health, (iii) evidence based public health, and (iv) implementation research with a focus on mental health.

The Department ‘Prevention and Evaluation’ is offering a position as a

PhD student in the field of mental health and implementation research (m/f/d)

Salary Scale 13 of the German Public Sector Salary System (TV-L)

25,48 hours/ week (65 %) starting as soon as possible for the duration of 3 years (contingent on funding)

Tasks:

  • Conducting an own research project for your doctoral degree (Dr PH)
  • Participating in the institute’s structured doctoral program
  • Publishing your research in peer-reviewed international journals

Requirements:

  • Excellent Master’s degree in public health, epidemiology, psychology or related disciplines
  • Thematic interest in (global) mental health research (specifically in the prevention and treatment of common mental disorders)
  • Strong research orientation and methodological skills
  • Excellent English language skills verbally and in writing
  • Initiative, motivation, commitment, and scientific curiosity

Desirable:

  • First experiences in writing scientific research articles and in giving presentations
  • Prior international research and/or educational experience in mental health (e.g. intervention research, and/or implementation of interventions for depression, anxiety or alcohol misuse)

What we offer:

The doctoral position is available in the research group “Mental health and implementation research” led by Prof.  Daniela Fuhr. The research group’s main focus is on the prevention and treatment of depression, anxiety and alcohol misuse and has a particular focus on the development and implementation of brief psychological interventions. A particular other interest is mental health among conflict-affected populations (i.e. refugees, internally displaced people). The research group takes an international pespective and research is currently conducted in Europe (including Ukraine), Africa and the middle East. Doctoral candidates are free to pursue their own research topic but it should be within the remit of the research group and focus on common mental disorders or alcohol misuse. We offer a structured PhD program, a stimulating international environment, close ties to the University of Bremen and an engaged, supportive and cooperative team. Our national and international collaboration networks can be used for academic exchange.

How to apply:

Please send us your preliminary dissertation proposal, a letter of motivation, your CV and a copy of your Master’s certificate. The dissertation topic should be related to common mental disorders with a focus on intervention and/or implementation research. Interventions addressing the social determinants of common mental disorders are within remit. We do not expect a fully developed dissertation proposal, but the proposal should include a) a rationale for the importance of the research, b) major research questions, c) suggested methods, d) anticipated outputs, and e) a timeline (max. five pages in total).
