About us

The Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology – BIPS develops effective strategies for the prevention of chronic, non-communicable diseases. Supporting a healthy life-course early on is our primary goal. The focus of our research is therefore on factors beyond individual diseases, such as lifestyle and environment, biological and social factors, as well as early detection of diseases and drug safety. Our research spectrum covers methodological development, the identification of the causes of diseases, and intervention and implementation research.

The Department of Statistical Methods in Epidemiology and the Data Science unit at BIPS contribute to a wide range of epidemiological research projects. Our work includes the analysis of cohort and other primary data, such as nutrition, physical activity, genetic and molecular data, as well as their combination with secondary data, including spatial exposure data.

Our research spans statistical methods for epidemiology, causal inference, interpretable machine learning and federated data analysis. We also support the quality assurance and monitoring of the upcoming field survey in the IDEFICS/I.Family cohort study.

  • Assisting with the organization and analysis of epidemiological data
  • Programming in R, Python or SAS (depends on the project)
  • Setting up simulation studies

The work is varied and offers insight into the day-to-day activities of biometricians and data scientists in epidemiological research.

Your profile

  • You are currently enrolled at a university in a relevant field.
  • You have a Bachelor’s degree in statistics, biostatistics, mathematics, data science, or a related discipline.
  • You have experience in programming (preferable in R, Python or SAS)
  • You are interested in quantitative methods and their application to health research.
  • You work carefully and reliably, and enjoy working as part of a team.
  • You are able to communicate in German and/or English.

What we offer
